A masked intruder forced a 56-year-old Summerville man out of his bed, made him open a safe, taped his hands and shot him in the stomach early Saturday morning.
The home invasion occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. Saturday on Cottonwood Drive, according to the incident report from the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office. The home is in the Crestwood subdivision, off Orangeburg Road near Dorchester Road.
The man told a deputy a black man wearing a mask and dark clothing woke him up and made him open a safe and took rare coins and jewelry. Then the intruder taped the resident’s hands and shot him in the stomach with a black semiautomatic handgun, according to the report.
Deputies found several pieces of paperwork the intruder had taken and then dropped in the road after he ran out the front door. A K-9 was brought in to try to track him.
There was no sign of forced entry, and the victim told deputies he usually leaves the front door unlocked, according to the report. He was taken to a local hospital.
